There are three subscription packages available: M+, which offers 65 channels (six of which are HD) for £6.50 per month; L, which boasts 100 channels (six of them HD) for £12.50 per month; and XL, which includes 160 channels (17 of them HD) for £24.50 per month.

The six HD channels offered in the M+ and L packages are: BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV 1 HD, Channel 4 HD, Five HD and Film Four HD – so you’d be paying a monthly subscription and not getting a great deal more HD content than the Freesat and Freeview box options. The value would come from the extra SD channels but if you’re only really interested in the HD content then perhaps look at other options.

Sky HD

Another subscription service, Sky HD requires an initial payment for set-up and the box, plus a monthly subscription for content. Every subscriber gets the same HD box, which allows recording and the ability to pause/rewind ‘live’ programming, so there’s no need to stress about which box would be best for you which might be an issue with some of the other services.

There are several SD packages to choose from at a variety of prices, and you’ll need to add the HD pack at an extra £10.25 per month to receive all the relevant HD channels for that package. The main advantage here, though, is that with 57 HD channels to choose from, Sky offers a lot more than its competitors for HD-hungry consumers. You would need to subscribe to the relevant SD package to get the specific HD content on top – for instance, if you want the HD sports channels then you would need to be subscribed to the SD sports pack and then also subscribe to the HD pack on top. If you just subscribe to the basic Sky package and then add the HD pack, you won’t get the sport. To get all 57 HD channels you’d need to subscribe to everything, which comes in at £62.25 per month, although there are obviously cheaper alternatives if you’re happy to pick and choose the channels you’re after.
